Volunteer Position Descriptions

Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County offers a variety of volunteer opportunities. After reading the position descriptions, and approximate time commitment below, please check the volunteer positions that you may be interested in.

- Management Team- Assist with the planning, coordinating and/or monitoring of activities to promote the Special Olympics mission in Baltimore County. Approximate time commitment: Minimum one year commitment involving regularly scheduled meetings as well as assignments associated with position. Current Vacancies: Competition Coordinator, Sports Training Coordinator, Unified Sports Coordinator, Outreach Coordinator, Public Relations Coordinator.
- Coach- Volunteers work with athletes to develop their athletic skills, prepare for competitions and plan and develop sports programs and events. Head coaches must be 18 years or older, attend a one day coaches training school, a volunteer general orientation and training session. Assistant coaches must be 16 years or older. Approximate time commitment: 5-8 hours per week for approximately 2-3 months.
- Event Volunteer- Volunteers support county events throughout the year. No special skills are required and training is provided. Approximate time commitment: 4-8 hours/event. Serve as a score keeper, an escort for taking athletes to and from their events, a timer, lane monitor, announcer, court judge, stager, hospitality assistant, a measurer and more.
- Fund Raising Volunteer- Volunteers assist with the planning and execution of small fund raisers, and our annual Inspiration Walk. Approximate time commitment: Minimum 8 month commitment involving meetings as well as assignments associated with position.
- Journalism Volunteer- Volunteers write articles about Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County athletes, families, and coaches as well as competition and event write-ups for our county website. Previous writing/editing experience a plus. Approximate time commitment: Minimum commitment of one article per month for 6 months. Individual volunteers from home.
- Photography Volunteer- Volunteer photographs Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County competiton & events. Previous sports photography experience a plus. Approximate time commitment: Minimum commitment of 6 months. Volunteer must have own equipment. Volunteer retains copyright of all photographs.
- Sports Volunteer- Volunteers, with the supervision of a Coach, work directly with athletes to improve their skills in specific Special Olympics sports.This is a seasonal position, dependent on sport. Flexible hours. Approximate time commitment: Minimum of 2 hours per week for 8 weeks prior to a competition.
- Unified Sports- Unified Sports is a Special Olympics program that brings together athletes with and without intellectual disabilities on teams for training and competition. Unified Partners must complete a partner release form and a volunteer general orientation and training. Approximate time commitment: 5-10 hours per week for 12 weeks each sports season.
- Volunteer Program Asst.- Volunteers assist the Volunteer Coordinator with the training, recruitment, and retention of volunteers. Ability to work with people of different cultures, ages and backgrounds is a must. Approximate time commitment: 2 hours per week for at least one year.
