SOMDBA Spring Games 2009!

Athletes from Baltimore County and Hartford County competed on Saturday, May 16, 2009 in the annual Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County Spring Games. The event served as a qualifier for the upcoming Special Olympics Maryland Summers Games at Towson University that will take place from June 5 – 7, 2009.

Throughout the morning, athletes competed in a number of track & field events including the 50m 100m, 200m, 400m, 4 x 100m relay, turbo jav, standing and running long jumps, shot put, and softball throw.

This qualifier was not the last for the track & field team of Special Olympics Maryland Baltimore County. They have one more qualifier, May 30, 2009 at McDonogh School, before they head to Towson University for the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games.

To compete in the Special Olympics Maryland Summer Games, athletes must train for eight weeks and compete in a minimum number of qualifiers. More than 1,200 athletes are expected to compete in the summer games.

The vision of Special Olympics Maryland is to be the leader in lifelong and unified sports programs for individuals with intellectual disabilities, empowering athletes to be valued members of their community and respected members of society.
